8 Most Effective Submissions Used In No-Gi BJJ

No-Gi submissions are viewed as the most effective since you can perform them on people wearing Gis and those who aren't.

1) Rear-Naked Choke — 'mata-leão' (lion killer). Most used submission in No-Gi and MMA. Low-risk, high-reward. 2) The Armbar — second most used in BJJ, works well in Gi and No-Gi. Can be secured from back mount, top mount, bottom guard, knee on belly, and side control. 3) Triangle Choke — third most effective in No-Gi settings. Blood choke using the legs — extremely challenging to escape once locked in. 4) The Guillotine Choke — one of the first chokes taught. Can be blood or air choke. Used as defense against takedowns. 5) Kimura — one of the oldest submissions (centuries old). Named after Judo master Masahiko Kimura who submitted Helio Gracie. Secured from side mount, bottom guard, bottom half guard. 6) Arm Triangle — low-risk, high-success rate blood choke. Also known as the head and arm choke. 7) D'arce Choke — excellent technique especially with longer arms. Easiest from top half guard. 8) The Americana — first submission most BJJ students learn. Low-risk; effective for self-defense since most people don't know how to defend against it. Typically secured from top or side mount.

"Simpler Is Better" — the basic submissions are all you need to dominate the mats.
